A criminal case is ordinarily tried by the court within whose local jurisdiction the offence was committed (Section 197 BNSS), which in practice means the district court that covers the police station that registered the FIR. A zero FIR registered elsewhere is transferred to the police station with jurisdiction, and the case follows that station. Some cases, such as CBI, PMLA and most NDPS matters, go to designated special courts instead.

A suit about immovable property is filed in the court where the property is situated, under Section 16 of the Code of Civil Procedure. Value then decides the level: Delhi's district courts hear suits valued up to ₹2 crore, and suits above that go to the original side of the Delhi High Court. Commercial disputes go to the designated commercial courts.

A cheque bounce complaint is filed in the court where the payee's bank branch is, if the cheque was presented for collection through the payee's account. That is the rule under Section 142(2) of the Negotiable Instruments Act as amended in 2015, which reversed the earlier position that the drawer's bank branch decided the court. So a Delhi payee banking in Rohini files at Rohini, wherever the drawer lives.

A divorce petition goes to the Family Court for the area where the marriage was solemnised, where the respondent lives, where the couple last lived together or, if the wife is filing, where she now lives (Section 19, Hindu Marriage Act). Whichever address satisfies one of those tests decides the district, and so the Family Court that hears the case.
